LEMIGAS has recently set up a new Engine Laboratory Which will be developed to become a center of research and service to the users on the application of the petroleum products in Indonesia. (French Petroleum Institute). For the time being, a series of reference tests have just been performed on the Petter W1 engine. The results obtained will confirm whether this setting up of the tests bench has been correct, and whether the results are acceptable. The qualities of engine oils when usesd in internal combustion engine under heavy duty conditions of operation can be evaluated from the tests . These include: (a)       The tendency of the oil to form oxidation products leading the corrosion of copper-lead bearing.(b)      The oxidation stability of the oil at high temperatures in presence of lead and copper catalysts. (c)       The tendency of the oil to form lacquer on engine components.
